Polyurethanes (PU, DIN abbreviation: PUR) are plastics or synthetic resins produced by the polyaddition reaction of diols (dialcohols) or polyols with polyisocyanates.
Characteristic of this material group is the urethane group, from which the name is derived.
Properties
Depending on the manufacturing process, polyurethanes can be hard and brittle or soft and elastic.
In particular, elastomeric polyurethanes are characterised by comparatively high tear resistance.
