Hydraulic cylinders convert the pressure energy of hydraulic fluid into mechanical energy and are therefore the most important drive element in hydraulics. The main designs are single-acting cylinders (one active direction of movement) and double-acting cylinders (two active directions of movement).
Hydraulic seals are predominantly used in cylinders with translational stroke movements. Their primary function is to prevent or significantly reduce the leakage of hydraulic fluid into the environment.

Key sealing components and their function
The central functional components of hydraulic cylinders are:

Rod seals: Prevent the escape of fluid from the inside to the outside (static sealing on the rod). Piston seals: Prevent fluid leakage through the cylinder head, enabling the required pressure build-up on one side of the piston to extend or retract it. Guide rings: Guide the piston and piston rod within the cylinder. They absorb transverse forces and prevent direct metal-to-metal contact, thereby reducing wear. Wipers: Minimise contamination by removing dirt, foreign particles, chips and moisture before they enter the system during the return stroke of the piston rod.

Hydraulic seals are the function-critical components of fluid power equipment and systems. Hydraulic cylinder seals in particular are used to reliably seal gaps between the various cylinder components. Their high technical standard is the result of many years of development in the demanding application fields of mobile and industrial hydraulics.

Classification and function
Hydraulic seals belong to the group of contact seals. A distinction is made between rotary and translational seals. They are used in hydraulics as well as in pneumatics whenever sealed chambers are connected by a moving machine element.

In the case of translational movements (e.g. rods and pistons), a distinction is made between rod seals and piston seals:

Rod seals seal the piston rod. The dynamic sealing edge is located on the inner side, while the static sealing surface is on the outer side of the sealing element. Piston seals are designed inversely: the dynamic sealing edge is located on the outer diameter, and the static sealing surface on the inner diameter.
